As Christmas nears and the holidays are in full swing, it’s nice to have comfort movies on deck to rotate through throughout the season. One of the most underrated Christmas movies as stated by ScreenRant, Last Holiday deserves to be added to your list of must-watches. The film centers around a woman named Georgia Byrd, a chef and a retail associate who’s scared of trying new things, such as the exquisite food she makes every night. One fateful day, she faints from banging her head on a cupboard door, and her love interest and work crush, Sean Williams, takes her to their healthcare unit. It’s there, that Georgia is informed that she only has weeks to live, as its discovered she has several brain tumors. So, Georgia decides to live her life to the fullest, quits her job, pools all her money together, jets off to the Czech Republic, and stays at the fancy Grandhotel Pupp. Here’s why Last Holiday should be on your list of Christmas movies.

Chemistry Between Queen Latifa and LL Cool J

From the beginning of the movie, it’s clear that Georgia is incredibly in love with her co-worker Sean, so much so that she has a scrapbook filled with cutout pictures of the two of them. It’s a scrapbook of what she wants her future to look like, and in it, Sean is her dreamy husband. Their interactions at work are awkward and hilarious; the two of them both having feelings for each other, but neither knowing how to deal with their feelings. Even though they only have a few scenes together, it’s clear that LL Cool J and Queen Latifa had great chemistry while working together.

Last Holiday is a perfect romance for Christmastime; their relationship not forced or written in a corny way, but one that makes the audience truly hope that they get together in the end. When Sean asks Georgia to go to a game with him in the near future, Georgia is purely devastated when she learns that she has only a few weeks to live, meaning that she won’t be able to go on their date. The pair balance each other out and have a perfect moment once reunited at the end, finally getting their kiss.

Death Brings Life

PGH states that in Last Holiday, Queen Latifa is living her best life. Her character of Georgia gets to that state of carefree living by being falsely diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, rendering her with only a few weeks to live. Georgia becomes a bit reckless, but in the best way, absorbing all her assets and quitting her job that treats her terribly, before taking a trip to one of the most expensive resorts, Grandhotel Pupp. She buys an entirely new wardrobe, establishing a new lavish style and ditching her usual sweater vests. Once she accepts that she only has a few weeks, Georgia lets all the fear leave her and starts to live life to the fullest.

While in the Czech Republic, Georgia befriends well-known Chef Didier, confiding in him about her illness, and together, they start to create beautiful dishes. Georgia gets to finally share her amazing food with people and under the wing of such a renowned and likable chef, especially since one of her biggest inspirations is Emerald Lagasse (who shows up at the end of the movie). As well as finally being able to share her food with dozens of people, Georgia also goes snowboarding and base-jumping from a dam. She does all these things in the name of regret and wanting to make up for living so safe, and by the end of the movie, she doesn’t regret a thing she did throughout her time at Grandhotel Pupp.

Good Old Fashioned Pining

Going back to Sean and Georgia’s story, audiences swoon for how Sean pines after Georgia. At first, it’s quiet and not so in-your-face. Sean is a bit shy, just like Georgia, and not admitting to how he feels about her. When Sean discovers that Georgia is sick and has literally fled the country, he makes it his mission to track her down to tell her that her feelings are reciprocated. At the same time, a snooty hotel staff member learns of Georgia’s sickness, and it melts her icy heart, leading her to tell Georgia to go home in order to spend time with the people she loves the most.

Georgia agrees and packs up her things, set on traveling home, but is shocked to learn that an avalanche has blocked off the road leading toward the airport. On the other side of the avalanche is Sean, and instead of turning around back to the airport, he sets out on foot to walk the rest of the way to the Grandhotel Pupp, and to Georgia. He walks through snow that’s up to his knees, all in the name of love, dead set on seeing Georgia and confessing his feelings toward her. Their reunion is incredibly sweet and the flash-forward of them owning their own restaurant is even sweeter, creating the perfect closure for a perfect Christmas movie.
