Although The Vampire Diaries Universe ran for thirteen successful years, the final show in the franchise, Legacies, concluded after four seasons. While it may be argued if the Legacies series finale was a massive conclusion for the franchise as a whole, it did an excellent job of wrapping up loose ends for the show. But should The Vampire Diaries Universe continue? After so many heroes, villains, redemption arcs, rising from the dead, and doppelgängers, the franchise may be better left to its conclusion rather than recreating a new set of characters and stories within the universe.

There may be space for more characters and stories to exist. Still, thirteen years is a long time, and leaving the franchise alone may allow it to rest peacefully rather than re-telling old storylines or struggling to figure out who the next big villain will be. While the franchise had gone on for years, Legacies crafted a final set of episodes that allowed the show to flourish in remembering its past and being content in its present while giving signs of a hopeful future. So although there may be rumors of The Vampire Diaries Universe continuing, it may be better off by not trying to create more.

Other Next Generation Characters Were Not Introduced

The Originals took the preexisting Mikaelsons and moved them over to New Orleans as the central figures. Then, when it was time for Legacies, the series pulled a similar trick, moving Hope Mikaelson, Josie Saltzman, and Lizzie Saltzman to center stage. But, Legacies had not introduced other characters that could have the capacity to take the lead.

Although Legacies would have introduced Elena and Damon’s daughter, Stefanie Salvatore, had there been a fifth season, she had only been mentioned briefly in a season one alternate universe episode. That is not enough to go on to become a potential leading character. Since Legacies never had the chance to do a real-time jump of its own, none of the central characters in the show had kids either. If there was another spinoff, who would it surround?

What Types Of Villains Are Left?

At first, stronger vampires were enough to mess with Stefan and Damon in Mystic Falls. They were both under two hundred years old and pretty weak compared to other vampires. However, introducing Katherine and the Originals showed the true extent of the power a vampire can have. Although The Vampire Diaries struggled to uphold its quality of villains after the Mikaelson family left town, other than the maniacal Kai Parker, the show was able to continue broadening the universe’s lore with different types of witches. The Originals’ biggest villain struggle was finding an opponent that matched the Mikaelson family in intelligence, wit, and intimidation, especially as the family could only be killed by the White Oak Stake. The series occasionally struggled to develop an antagonist that could bring legitimate stakes to the immortal family. However, it still prevailed in broadening the scope, including the Hollow, which took the helm as the biggest antagonist during the show’s final two seasons.

By the time Legacies rolled around, the show was scrambling for a new opponent. Although Legacies dabbled in having Hope, Josie, and Lizzie face their pasts, such as Aurora De Martel or Kai Parker’s returns, most of the series surrounded a monster-of-the-week as the Super Squad searched for ways to defeat Malivore. Along the way, Legacies also allowed Dark Josie and No-Humanity Hope to step up as antagonists. The Necromancer was also known to come and go as one of the Super Squad’s opponents. When the series finally moved on from Malivore, its next major villain toward the Super Squad’s safety was the God, Ken. Nearly impossible to kill, how do you create a more powerful villain than the Gods?

Absences Of Other TVDU Characters Questions A New Protagonist

While the Mikaelson family and Caroline Forbes may have finally made appearances by the series finale, plenty of other characters were still absent. Bonnie Bennett, Elena Gilbert, and Damon Salvatore were all absent from Legacies. A spinoff surrounding Bonnie or Bonnie’s child may have been plausible, but as Bonnie never appeared on the show, and there was never a mention of her having a kid, it may be too far of a reach to feel like it is the next show in consecutive order.

Although directly connected to the two original characters, Stefanie Salvatore would not have a supernatural element in her unless a time jump revealed she had become a vampire. Each spinoff series focused on characters already known to the fan base before the spinoff show started. So who would be the new protagonist, and where would it take place?

Legacies Gave The Franchise A Solid Conclusion

By the final moments of Legacies, the understanding of the Salvatore School’s fate is understood. At the same time, Caroline will be taking over, at least temporarily; the finale hints that Cleo will eventually be in charge one day. Legacies also solidifies endings for the entire Mikaelson family, having shown Hope finally getting closure from her father’s death and spreading his ashes. Rebekah and Marcel’s fate of getting married was confirmed as well, as was Freya and Keelin having a son, Nik, and Kol and Davina staying together.

Josie’s arc of choosing to do something for herself, such as attending a new school, got addressed, as did her participation in returning Hope’s humanity. Lizzie’s transition into a Heretic likely prevents Lizzie and Josie from having to Merge, which answers the question of how the twins would need to deal with surviving past their twenty-second birthday. Finally, Caroline returning to the Salvatore School was a long-awaited moment that Legacies needed to make happen before the series ended. The finale gave closure to everyone, and continuing the saga may not be with characters that are as deeply connected to the three shows in the franchise.
