Obi-Wan Kenobi is a fantastic addition to the Star Wars extended universe. But let’s face it, Obi-Wan isn’t the star of the show. With the short miniseries coming to a close, the question on everyone’s mind is whether or not it will be renewed for a second season. There are plenty of good reasons why we would want to see the journey continue and even more parts of the story we want to see explored. But, like The Mandalorian, the true gift Obi-Wan Kenobi gives to the Star Wars universe is a host of characters that we all knew existed but had never seen before.
Obi-Wan Kenobi brings us into a world that does exactly what it’s supposed to: give the fans what they want. And what we want is more. Before it came out, everyone wondered exactly what story Obi-Wan would tell. We were already excited to see Darth Vader and Kenobi go another round for their lightsaber duel. But Young Leia was an exciting surprise to the storyline, and the Third Sister has been a compelling tale throughout the series. We’ve seen it done with The Book of Boba Fett. Who’s to say that Obi-Wan Kenobi couldn’t have a spin-off series that follows one of our favorite characters?

Young Leia’s Exciting Life as a Hero
Lucasfilm
The best surprise to find when seeing Obi-Wan for the first time is that instead of protecting Luke, Kenobi was dragged off-planet to save Leia Organa from the hands of the Inquisitors. While many of us wondered how Luke would stay secret and ignorant to even his own true identity but be constantly assailed by dark forces, the answer was simple: Leia would be the target.
It fits perfectly with the original story; Leia’s early life was exciting and filled with danger, which is what makes her a strong leader and hero of the Rebellion. Her rescue is a good reason for Obi-Wan to do something else besides age slowly in the desert. In fact, she’s the whole reason the series is exciting to begin with, and there’s much more to explore.
The series doesn’t really need Obi-Wan at all. In the future, as everyone gets older, Leia will begin to take care of herself. Her position in the Galactic Senate will become more prominent than her father’s, and so will her post in the Rebellion. Even this young Princess Leia is ready to handle difficult situations, and Obi-Wan won’t need to be around when she grows up. This is a perfect excuse for Disney to create a series that tells the story of the early days of the Rebellion. One that talks about rescuing Jedi and making plans to overthrow the Empire.
We could still see Obi-Wan, as he will, of course, be a part of the Rebellion as it becomes a greater force in the galaxy. But his character will inherently remain loyal to his duty to protect the young Luke. We’ve seen it be the motivating force behind his character in the series so far. Leia is the exciting one that fans will want to follow. As she grows up, her life will become more dangerous and action-packed. She’s more likely to have a confrontation with Darth Vader than Obi-Wan is as the years go on.
Darth Vader’s Mission of Revenge
Fans are already excited about the pre-Yavin/post-Revenge of the Sith era of Star Wars. And it’s thanks largely to the Darth Vader comic book that takes place immediately after Revenge of the Sith ends. Made under the Marvel banner, Disney should already have the rights to it, and it’s remained one of the best parts of the extended universe ever since the prequels.
The story follows Vader as Emperor Palpatine uses his power to hunt down the remainder of the Jedi and slowly nurtures the hate in his heart. It’s a fan’s first real look at the dark side of the Force. As Darth Vader travels around the galaxy, we see the defining attributes of the Sith and what one does to make oneself a master of the dark side. These are the first years of the Empire.
While most of the Jedi have been wiped out, there are still scattered members of the order resisting the power of the Emperor. As Darth Vader hunts them down, we could see quite a few spectacular lightsaber fights. We would also see a unique perspective on Vader’s character that the previous Star Wars projects have yet to show us. We would get a look at the internal workings as he searches for Obi-Wan, seeking revenge.
After the first season of Obi-Wan finishes, there will be many other stories to tell, but Obi-Wan’s story might be finished. He will be around the galaxy, but the excitement will have gone elsewhere. What fans will really want to see are the new characters the Obi-Wan introduced us to.
