The first full-length trailer for the Sam Raimi-produced film 65 dropped on Wednesday, and it is every bit as crazy as we thought. The movie, which will be released on March 10, 2023, promises futuristic action in the far past. How far? 65 million years. The trailer gives us many answers and leaves us with far too many tantalizing questions.

The film features Adam Driver (The Last Duel) as Commander Mills, the hero space pilot. It also features Ariana Greenblatt (Awake) as a young girl named Koa

65 is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the writers/producers of A Quiet Place. It is co-produced by Bron and Columbia Pictures. The movie will be one of the first large-scale projects Driver has done since his lauded performance in The Last Dual.

Crashing Landing In A New World Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up To Be

     Columbia Pictures

The trailer begins with pilot Commander Mills, calling in a mayday because his ship, which is carrying 35 passengers on a long-range exploratory mission, has been hit by a rogue asteroid. We learn that due to the asteroid strike they have crashed on an unknown world where it appears all but one of the passengers have died.

Commander Mills finds the pod containing the body of the young girl, Koa’s who seems to still be in stasis. The pod she is in is half sunk in some kind of swamp. As Mills trudges through thigh-deep muck a spiny, serpentine tail emerges and dips behind him. As he begins exploring the world he describes it as having breathable air. We also see him using a futuristic water bottle to test liquid.

We also see a glimpse of the futuristic technology that is aboard Mills’ ship. From futuristic controls to silver grenades and what looks to be his primary weapon. It is a rifle-like gun that seems to shoot energy bullets. The barrel has a line of green symbols that disappear one by one as he fires each shot.

During this time, we watch as the main character explores the world. It seems beautiful and idyllic with forests and waterfalls. But soon we begin to see a more savage land as Driver’s character begins marking trees with red Xs. Perhaps he’s marking a path? Or maybe he’s showing people a perimeter they shouldn’t cross?

Mills speaks in voiceover saying “there’s something alien out there” as we see him from overhead stepping into a gigantic footprint in the pouring rain. Then, a daytime shot of Mills and Koa looking up at a thin and yellowed forest ridge. Trees sway strangely and there is a brief glimpse of what looks like a massive head.

Several titles appear. The first reads “65 million years ago" while he wakes his companion. Another title appears, reading “a search for a new world.” Mills and Koa seem to have been in a cave. He stands with his rifle and a light in his hand. Behind them, lightning strikes, illuminating the entrance. And there, all teeth and scales in the crackling momentary light is a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

When the third title appears, “led to prehistoric earth,” the Tyrannosaurus bellows and opens its jaws, pushing its massive head into the cave. Mills’ gun warms up, all the green indicators lighting up on the barrel as he quickly unloads his shots into the head of the animal, forcing it back.

The next few seconds are slaps of scenery, dead plains, running, and at least one Velociraptor. The entire time Mills is protecting the girl, giving her advice and directions. We see Mills throw his grenades which are silver balls that, when they land, split open into three pieces and begin showing electricity coursing through, though we never see them explode.

The final shots are in the dark. Mills is running from the tyrannosaurus but behind it is a giant mech machine that seems to be walking rather than using wheels or flying. It also seems like more primitive and militaristic technology compared to the ship that mills arrived in at the beginning.

Will Mill and Koa Survive Their New World?

     Sony Pictures Releasing

While we know that the movie takes place 65 million years ago, it is only hinted that this is the land our past. If it is, Adam Driver’s character is not of Earth. In fact, all written language we see on his ship is alien. Should this be the case, what are we to take away from this?

Since Ariana Greenblatt’s character does not appear in the trailer it’s safe to say she could play any number of parts. She may be another surviving passenger of the crashed ship, making her own way through the harsh world alone. Her character may be another pilot sent to rescue Commander Mills and any other survivors. Or perhaps she’s the one piloting the giant mech, attempting to save Mills from the charging dinosaur.

In the end, we know that man did not appear until roughly two million years ago. If it is our Earth, there are no natives to interact with. It may be a simple cat-and-mouse survival movie where Driver and Coleman must simply fight prehistoric creatures until rescue arrives.
